On January 21, a team of 22 sixth grade students from South Pasadena Middle School placed 1st in California and 30th in the United States in the 39th National Elementary Knowledge Master Open. A total of 322 schools participated nationwide.
The students were selected by the faculty of SPMS in recognition of academic excellence and class participation. The team was challenged by 100 questions covering all subject areas. The answers were submitted via computer, with the encoded results being sent to the Knowledge Master Open headquarters in Durango, Colorado.
The competition took 90 minutes to complete. Students were not allowed to use any calculators or resource materials. All results and statistics are available at www.greatauk.com.
The South Pas team included Alex Kim, John Dullaghan, Petra Barbu, Samuel Garcia, Sheldon Zhu, Cameron Wong, Christopher Lopez, Brooke Drury, Glenda Chen, Andrew Zableckis, Samuel Hoadley-Brill, Ethan Ng, Adam Stanford-Moore, Marion Wood, Samuel Benzoni, Tim Wong, Amy Choi, Matt Park, Tim Song, and Will Renken.
Swanson Middle School from Arlington, Virginia was #1 in the United States. Points were awarded for both speed and accuracy. Sycamore answered 95 questions correctly, while SPMS solved 93.
