SUPER SATURDAY FOR SPMS MATH TEAM
MEANWHILE, AT THE OTHER END OF THE VALLEY...
The competitive math season opened with a bang at the 34th annual Don Bosco Math Field Day, held December 10, in Rosemead. Nearly 300 students from 14 schools in the Los Angeles area competed in this challenging event.  South Pasadena Middle School captured the 1st place trophy.  Harvard-Westlake of Los Angeles placed second and Huntington School of San Marino finished third.

South Pasadena was led by Jung Hun Koh, Oleksandr Stubailo, Nikita Kitaev, and Janet Xu. Also scoring in the top 25 individuals were Lok Lei, Ted Xiao, and Eleanor Chan.  Jung Hun was given an individual trophy for placing 2nd overall in the competition.
At the same time, the top female 7th grade math students from nine schools in the San Gabriel Valley gathered in Sierra Madre for the 7th annual Alverno High School Math Field Day.  The team of South Pas students Christine Chen, Jasmine Griffin, Elaine Horng, and Hannah Kan won the 1st Place Sweepstakes Trophy.
MARVELOUS MATHCOUNTS TEAM
On Saturday, February 25,  top students representing 14 schools from La Canada to Long Beach met in the 24th annual MATHCOUNTS competition.  South Pasadena Middle School took the first place trophy, with San Marino placing second and La Canada third.

SPMS was represented by Jung Hun Koh, Sashko Stubailo, Nikita Kitaev, Ivan Pyzow, Lok Lei, Janet Xu, Ted Xiao, and Rebecca Orr.  South Pas dominated the individual awards, taking the top four places.  Jung Hun was first, followed by Sashko, Nikita, and Ivan.  Lok, Janet, Ted, and Rebecca all placed among the top 20. 
As a result of their victory, SPMS will represent the East Los Angeles county region in the state finals of MATHCOUNTS, to be held March 18 at U. C. Irvine.  The winner of this event will represent California in Washington D. C. in May.

MATHCOUNTS is the most competitive math event for middle schools in the nation.  Over 6,000 schools and 500,000 students compete nationwide each year.  The program is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers and Raytheon.
Over 200 students from 8 middle schools in the San Gabriel Valley gathered at Mark Keppel High School on Saturday, March 4, for the 26th Annual Alhambra Math Field Day.  South Pasadena students took first place in nine of the ten events.

Also recognized for placing among the top ten in their event were Nikita Kitaev, Candace Chen, Brian Christensen, Brandon Park, Stephanie Ah-Quah, and Audrey Kim.
TIGERS ROAR AT MATH FIELD DAY
MATHCOUNTS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA STATE FINALS

The best math teams from San Diego to the Central  Valley gathered at UC Irvine on March 18 for the state finals of MATHCOUNTS.  The SPMS team of Sashko Stubailo, Nikita Kitaev, Ivan Pyzow, and Jung Hun Koh placed 3rd in this prestigious event.  CONGRATULATIONS TIGER MATH TEAM!

At the annual Open House Academic Awards ceremony, 8th grader Sashko Stubailo wasrecognized as MATHEMATICIAN OF THE YEAR 2005-2006.  Sashko led the Tiger Math Team in 14 local, state, national, and international events.

CONGRATULATIONS to the SPMS math team for an outstanding year.  The team participated in 14 local, state, national, and international events.  Here are the highlights:

The United States Math Olympiad Committee invited 7th grader Jung Hun Koh to take the qualifying examination for their international team.  Jung Hun is one of only four 7th graders in the United States accorded this honor.  The USMOC sent commendations to twelve SPMS students for their outstanding results in the 2006 AMC10, a math exam used to determine the top 10th grade math students nationwide!  CONGRATULATIONS to Christine Chen, Luka Douridas, Jasmine Griffin, Sabrina Ketel, Nikita Kitaev, Jung Hun Koh, Lok Lei, Rachel Ma, Rebecca Orr, Ivan Pyzow, Sashko Stubailo, and Janet Xu.  More information is available at http://www.unl.edu/amc/

Additionally, several SPMS students were recognized for their excellence In the 2006 AMC8 exam. 7th graders Melissa Chan, Joey Goode, Elaine Horng, Nicholas Leung, Cole Rainey, and Alexander Zhang, and 6th graders Tiffany Chen and James Kawakami were awarded certificates of honor for scores which ranked them among the highest scoring 8th graders in America. 

MATHCOUNTS is the most prestigious middle school math competition in America.  Sponsored by Raytheon and the National Society of Professional Engineers, over 6000 schools participated this year.  The SPMS team of Sashko Stubailo, Ivan Pyzow, Nikita Kitaev, Jung Hun Koh, Lok Lei, Janet Xu, Rebecca Orr, and Ted Xiao placed first in the East Los Angeles region.  The team advanced to the state finals, where they placed 3rd in Southern California.  More information is available at www.mathcounts.org

MATHFAX is a geometry problem solving event. Jung Hun Koh placed 5th in the U. S. out of nearly 2200 students.  Sashko Stubailo was 14th. Rebecca Orr and Sabrina Ketel were also in the top 60 nationwide.  The team was 5th among 112 competing schools.  Full details are available at www.educontest.com

6th grader Tiffany Chen, 7th grader Nikita Kitaev, and 8th grader Janet Xu aced the CONTINENTAL MATH LEAGUE, going 24 for 24.  In the 6th grade, Daniel Pyon was second, followed by Cody Dunn and Eli Weinstein. 7th graders Jasmine Griffin and Anthony San Pedro placed second, with Kevin Figueroa in 3rd place. And in the 8th grade, Lok Lei, Ted Xiao, and Jung Hun Koh tied for 2nd, while Rebecca Orr, Brandon Park, Soo In Yoon, Cherry Shen, and Ricky Hong tied for 3rd. Our 8th grade team tied for 1st in the U.S., the 7th graders tied for 4th, and the 6th grade tied for 7th, among nearly 400 schools. 

In the SIGMA MATH LEAGUE, 7th grader Nikita Kitaev was 40 for 40!  Only four 7th graders out of 6,306 participants in the U.S., aced the entire competition.  Ivan Pyzow, Jung Hun Koh, and Jasmine Griffin were close behind.   Sashko Stubailo lead the way in the 8th grade, closely followed by Christina Chung, Rebecca Orr, Candace Chen, Lok Lei, and Jim Wood.  Tiffany Chen, Cody Dunn, and Daniel Pyon tied for first in the 6th grade.  Katherine Wang and Aashrita Mangu also submitted outstanding results.   SPMS was 2nd out of 102 participating schools following four rounds, with the final results not available at the time of this printing. 

8th grader Janet Xu and 7th graders Jung Hun Koh and Ivan Pyzow aced the CALIFORNIA MATH LEAGUE, going 40 for 40.  Top scores were also submitted by 8th graders Sashko Stubailo, Sabrina Ketel, Rebecca Orr and Lok Lei.  Top 7th grade scores included Jasmine Griffin, Nikita Kitaev and Alexander Zhang, while Jane Park, Max White, and Tiffany Chen ranked 1, 2, 3 in the 6th grade.  Final team results will soon be known at http://www.mathleague.com/

In the MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD, 6th grader Tiffany Chen took 1st place, correctly solving 24 of 25 challenging problems.  Eli Weinstein placed 2nd, followed by Daniel Pyon and Max White tied for third.  Team results will soon be available at http://www.moems.org

The Rocket City Math League emphasizes math levels, rather than grade levels.  Davy Li was tops in Pre-Algebra, 22nd in the U.S., followed by Eli Weinstein and Daniel Pyon.  Ivan Pyzow ranked 6th in the U.S. in Algebra, followed by Nikita Kitaev (19th in the U.S.) and Jasmine Griffin.  Jung Hun Koh was 2nd in the U.S. in Geometry, Sashko Stubailo was 6th, and Lok Lei 22nd.   http://www.rocketcitymath.org/index1.htm

In Math Kangaroo, and international problem solving event, eleven SPMS students placed in the top 10 for their grade level:  6th graders Daniel Pyon, Max White, Max Wolf, and Rin Sone.  7th graders Ivan Pyzow, Jasmine Griffin, Jung Hun Koh, and Nikita Kitaev.  8th graders Sashko Stubailo, Candace Chen, and Janet Xu.  http://www.mathkangaroo.org/

In the University of Wisconsin Purple Comet Math Meet, the South Pasadena team of Jung Hun Koh, Ivan Pyzow, Nikita Kitaev, Lok Lei, Rebecca Orr, and Sashko Stubailo placed NUMBER 1 among over 350 competing schools!!  The full results are available at:  http://math.uww.edu/mathmeet/

In the Korean-American Scientist and Engineer Association Southern California Mathematics Competition, 6th grader Daniel Pyon, 7th grader Jung Hun Koh, and 9th grader Jay Park (last year's SPMS Mathematician of the Year), took 1st place in their grade level category.  http://www.ksea-sc.org/

One event remains, the LOS ANGELES COUNTY MATH FIELD DAY. Representing SPMS with be 6th graders Jane Park, Cody Dunn, Tiffany Chen and Daniel Pyon, 7th graders Jasmine Griffin, Nikita Kitaev, Ivan Pyzow, and Jung Hun Koh, and 8th graders Janet Xu, Rebecca Orr, Lok Lei, and Sashko Stubailo.  The event takes place June 3.  Stay tuned for those results.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY MATH FIELD DAY
The 2005-2006 competitions ended with the Los Angeles County Math Field, held June 3 at Manhattan Beach. The SPMS teams were:
