SPMS MATH TEAM 2007-2008
South Pasadena Middle School students Max White, Daniel Pyon, Moses Kim, Tiffany Chen, Fedor Kossakovski, Cody Dunn, Aashrita Mangu, and Michelle Lam placed 1st in the 25th Annual MATHCOUNTS competition.  Every private and public school from Long Beach to La Canada was invited to this competitive event, which took place February 23 in Pico Rivera.

Pasadena Polytechnic placed second and Long Beach Hughes finished third.  Individually, Max White placed first, Daniel Pyon second, and Moses Kim fourth among 120 top math students.

IN MATH FIELD DAY

Over 200 students from 11 middle schools in the San Gabriel Valley gathered at Mark Keppel High School on Saturday, March 8, for the 28th Annual Alhambra Math Field Day.  South Pasadena students took first place in six of the nine events.  Huntington Middle School of San Marino ranked second, and Brightwood Intermediate of Alhambra was third.

MATHCOUNTS 08
SPMS FIRST AT DON BOSCO TECH
South Pasadena Middle School captured the first place trophy at the 36th annual Don Bosco Math Field Day, held April 13, in Rosemead. Over 200 students from 10 schools in the Los Angeles area competed in this challenging event. 

Mirman School of Los Angeles  placed 2nd, and Ynez School of Monterey Park finished in 3rd.

Individually, South Pasadena 7th grader Moses Kim took 2nd place, while 8th graders Daniel Pyon, Tiffany Chen, and Cody Dunn ranked 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively. Also scoring in the top 25 individuals were Alex Tranquada, Max White, Fedor Kossakovski, James Kawakami, Anmi Zheng, Aritra Bhattacharya, Aashrita Mangu, Wendy Tsai, and Freddy Tsao. 

MATH KANGAROO
Over 40 countries worldwide participate in the Math Kangaroo.  The Kangaroo is a problem solving competition originating in Easter Europe and gaining increased popularity in the United States, where over 2000 students participated this year.

SPMS 8th graders dominated the U.S. competition, placing 6 in the top 10.  Daniel Pyon (1st), Joyce Alexander (5th), Cody Dunn (7th), Matthew Wong (8th), Max White (9th), Melody Sue (10th) were all recognized and awarded various prizes for their outstanding work.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY MATH FIELD DAY
On June 7, South Pasadena 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders excelled at the 2008 Los Angeles County Math Field Day.  Over 300 students representing school districts from throughout the county participated.  The competition was held at Toll Middle School in Glendale. 

South Pasadena Middle School eighth graders Tiffany Chen, Cody Dunn, Daniel Pyon, and Max White placed 1st overall in the county, capturing gold medals in Conceptual Understanding and Problem Solving and a silver medal in Procedural Skills.

Seventh Graders Moses Kim, Sean Ma, Ryan Smith, and Wendy Tsai placed 1st in Problem Solving, 2nd in Procedural Skills, and 3rd in Conceptual Understanding.

Sixth graders Jack Bishoip, Chelsea Hong, Jae Kim and Rhian Moore earned the gold in Conceptual Understanding, the silver in Problem Solving, and the bronze in Procedural Skills.
