Outstanding achievement in mathematics was recognized at the annual South Pasadena Middle School Open House Awards ceremony on May 19.
Eighth grader Julie Wu was presented a trophy as the Mathematician of the Year. Wu led the South Pasadena Tiger Cub team in ten local, state, and national events. Supervisor Mike Antonovich sent Wu a card of congratulations.
Wu tied for 1st in the United States in the Continental Math League and received a special medallion. She and teammates Candice Yen, Eric Kim, Alex Wang, Paul Kim, Rebecca Tsaur, and Arie Wong led the SPMS eighth grade team to a 4th place finish nationally out of 243 competing schools.
Seventh grader Danny Angel also received a special medallion from the Continental Math League, tying for first place at his grade level. He and teammates Doug Muhlestein, Krystal Tung, Micah Chan, Devin Corr-Robinnett, Levon Henry, Katherine Lau, Bowen Zhang, and Haley Muhlestein propelled the SPMS seventh grade team to 7th place among 257 competing schools in the U.S.
Lok Lei, Peter Demyanenko, Candace Chen, Jane Kim, and Sabrina Ketel led the 6th graders to 18th place among 393 schools. The Continental Math League is based in St. James, New York.
Julie Wu also received a gold medal for placing 6th in the nation in the Sigma Math League. A total of 36,420 eighth grade students participated in this problem solving competition, headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. Eighth graders Rebecca Tsaur and Anand Kesavaraju, and seventh grader Levon Henry were awarded silver medals, while seventh graders Danny Angel and Bowen Zhang were presented bronze medals. As a team, SPMS ranked 7th in the United States.
Seventh grader Bowen Zhang was praised for being one of only 15 students in the state to achieve a perfect score in the California Math League. Zhang, and teammates Krystal Tung, Danny Angel, and Levon Henry led the 7th grade team to a 4th place finish in California among 139 private and public
schools.
Janet Xu, Christina Chung, Lok Lei, and Sashko Stubailo led the 6th grade team to a #1 ranking in the San Gabriel Valley and #8 in the state in the California Math League.
Sixth graders Janet Xu, Tyler Ryan, and Lok Lei were awarded the Gold Pin of excellence by the Mathematical Olympiad, for placing in the top 2% of all students in this year's event. The Math Olympiad program challenged over 100,000 students in the United States and 32 other countries. Presented a Silver Pin for placing in the top 10% worldwide were Candace Chen, Patrick Adelstein, Sabrina Ketel, Audrey Kim, Rachel Ma, Rebecca Orr, Natalya Subbotina, Andrew Yu, Brian Christensen, Luke Eilers, Christina Chung, Tess Gilmore, Nathaniel Lash, Siobhan O'Connell, Brandon Park, and Jim Wood. .
Also awarded a Gold Pin of excellence was 8th grader Stephanie
Yoon. Silver Pins of excellence went to 7th graders Henry Chen and Kaitlyn Sunabe and to 8th graders Paul Kim, Eric Kim, Caitline LaBrie, and Daniel Cho.
The students were presented gifts of appreciation donated by Kaiser
Permanente, Primus, Prentice Hall Publishers, McDougal-Littell Publishers, Foothill Credit Union, and the Environmental Affairs Department of the City of Los Angeles.
On June 5, South Pasadena 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders excelled at the 2004 Los Angeles County Math Field Day. Nearly 400 students representing school districts from throughout the county participated. The competition was held at Placerita Junior High School in Newhall.
South Pasadena Middle School eighth graders Sam Ettinger, Rebecca Tsaur, Arie Wong, and Julie Wu placed 1st in Geometry, 1st in Problem Solving, 2nd in Algebra, 2nd in Statistics, and 3rd in Number Sense. Only Palos Verdes Penninsula School District was able to outscore the Tigers.
Seventh Graders Levon Henry, Gloria Lee, Doug Muhlestein, and Bowen Zhang were almost as outstanding, placing 1st in Algebra, 1st in Problem Solving, 2nd in Number Sense, 3rd in Statistics, and 4th in Geometry.
Sixth graders Candace Chen, Lok Lei, Sashko Stubailo, and Janet Xu ranked 2nd in Geometry, 2nd in Number Sense, 3rd in Statistics, 4th in Algebra, and 4th in Problem Solving.
Fifth graders Christine Chen, Nikita Kitaev, Ivan Pyzow, and Jon Weiner were praised for placing 3rd in Problem Solving, 4th in Number Sense, and 4th in Geometry.
Fourth graders Justin Cornford, Yee-Lum Mak, Daniel Pyon, and Max White placed 1st in Geometry, 2nd in Number Sense, 3rd in Algebra, and 3rd in Statistics.
